SET-J is Tops on Mrs. Demsey's List
Although some time has passed since my trip to Japan, I still struggle to find words that capture my experiences there. I am truly honored to have been given the opportunity to travel to Japan and immerse myself in the place, the people and the culture. It was the journey of a lifetime. But I did not take this journey alone. The meticulous planning, the hours and efforts put forth by SET-J members here and abroad ensured that throughout my trip, I carried with me the spirit of SET-J and the Lawrence community. This spirit was reinforced and magnified by the generosity and kindness of Lawrence friends and families I met along the way.
I will never forget watching from the plane, awestruck, as Japan seemed to rise out of the depths of the Pacific Ocean and beckon to me as we arrived. My dream of traveling to Japan had been realized! With stops in various cities, home stays, visits to temples and schools, I was quickly immersed in the culture, gaining invaluable experiences and insights. In many ways, it feels like the trip settled around my soul; it added so much to my life experiences that it inevitably affects those that I interact with, with the most important direct impact being on the students that I teach.
The experience gave me the opportunity to grow professionally and expand my teaching practices. In particular, it has made a vast difference in the way I am able to teach our unit on Japan. I have been able to integrate authentic materials, accurate information, and traditional arts from the country into the current curriculum. I now share pictures, personal stories and small video clips about the schools, homes, families and ways of life that I experienced so that students can feel as if they had been transported with me to Japan.
Here's my Top Ten List of things I loved about my trip to Japan:
10. The sense of independence as I traveled on my own
9. Visiting and Onsen
8. Learning Japanese
7. Traveling on the Shinkansen
6. Hiroshima and Miyajima
5. Asakusa and the Buddhist Monks Chanting
4. Home stays
3. The food (especially mochi, tempura, miso soup)
2. The absolute kindness, gentleness and generosity of the people
I. Meeting and staying with Lawrence families from the past, both those I'd taught and those I was meeting for the first time.
